Sarabeth Goodell, the mother of NFL draft franchise owner Brett Goodell, had a long-running feud with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. He is thought to be extremely close with GM Trent Baalke, the team owner currently working for a new NFL team on the West Coast, as well as the league office. "The moral compass and sense of ethics of both Brett and B.G. are not to be forgotten," Commissioner Goodell said. "My prayers are with them all.

"KP is not dead or gone because of me, so enjoy the little taste of his fatherly affection in the last moments of his life."

Goodell and her late husband, George Harwell, lived in Santa Monica, California and raised their 5 children there. The former commissioner had a distinguished career in the NFL with the San Diego Chargers and Denver Broncos from 1989-93, before returning to the Chargers in 1995.

While former commissioner Paul Tagliabue retired at the top of the 2015 season, and Barry Sherman reached the 15-year mark as NFL commissioner in 2017 at the age of 77, the next living commissioner may be someone based in the same space - albeit in a different country. Goodell, 43, completed his 21st season as commissioner on May 6. His presidency will see the final season of the Pete Carroll-led Los Angeles Rams. Goodell's successor will likely be appointed during 2020 at the earliest.

During his NFL tenure Goodell has made his play for fairness and accountability. When he took over for a suspended Ray Guy for the 2009 season, the league began a new investigation into player conduct. In 2017 the NFL hired an outside company to investigate improper signals and positioning by players on the field. That same year Goodell led an investigation into Roger Goodell, the embattled incumbent commissioner, accused of what at times appeared to be infractions over the extension of former sports broadcasting icon Janet Jackson's contract. In 2017 Goodell also banned players from speaking to fans. In 2009, the NFL increased the amount of time players were required to report to the league office.

In 2018 Goodell took a step back from the league office by officially leaving the NFL, including a formal separation agreement. That is, from now on he would be out of a conflict of interest.
