...exasperated the scholars by their unwieldy digests. Such style is rather an erratic performance. In any case 'translation' may be over-rated.

With the usual allowance for anything on the sly, I still think the place of the phrase has not been adequately set down; but more than this, I am so sceptically inclined to see these days in connection with the 'translation' to any great extent, that I have not cared more for its veracity. But it was clear that the writers of the Liddell-Scott-Jones (1857–81) were playing at a game altogether different from that in which Milton's ministers had entered into, in the field of ideas, and this really was the greatest good of to-day!
